Grants under the Support Fund for Strengthening Protected Areas (FAR AP) were awarded to two North PAs for their participation in the first Regional Day of Vondron’Olona Ifotony (JRVOI) or grassroots communities.

Thanks to this contribution from FAPBM, Lokobe and Ambohitr’Antsingy (Montagne des Français) (Northern Madagascar, DIANA Region) were able to present a delegation for the celebration hosted by the city of Ambanja on October 15 2022.

The DIANA Region, for a better consideration of protected areas

Workshops for sharing best practices, discussion sessions with the authorities as well as exhibitions set the pace throughout the day.

The celebration of this regional day by the DIANA region shows the commitment of the region for protected areas. It also reflects the results of advocacy actions led by the Platform of DIANA Protected Areas Managers. Officially created in 2017, the platform gathers eight protected area managers of DIANA Region.  Faced with diverging interests in conservation, the DIANA protected areas managers platform is making the voices of managers and communities heard.

Through this annual celebration, the Diana Region wishes to support and encourage the commitment of grassroots communities as local managers of natural resources in their respective protected areas.

FAPBM’s advocacy for community-based actions

FAPBM’s 2021 annual report reinforces the effectiveness of collaborative management in achieving conservation objectives. It is recognized that community contributions are not systematically valued and that current support is inadequate.

FAPBM calls for the establishment of mechanisms for the fair redistribution of benefits from protected areas to communities. It recommends the support from the private sector for the success of value chains. It calls for strengthening the communities’ capacity to manage protected areas, as targeted by JRVOI.
